The best time to visit Tanzania is the dry season from June to October. Wildlife is easier to see and roads are good.
A shorter dry period in January–February is also excellent. Rainy months (March–May) have fewer tourists but wet roads. Zanzibar is nice most of the year.
Yellow fever certificate is needed only if you come from a risky country. Most travelers from Europe, USA, and Asia do not need it.
You need a tourist visa. Apply online (e-visa) or get it on arrival. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months.
Get routine vaccines: MMR, Tdap, Hepatitis A, and Typhoid. Malaria tablets are highly recommended.
Visit a doctor 4–6 weeks before travel for advice. Rabies vaccine is good for long trips.
You need a valid passport, visa, and return ticket. All visitors must buy mandatory Zanzibar Inbound Insurance (about USD 44).
Wear neutral colors like khaki and beige. Pack long-sleeve shirts, light pants, hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
Bring binoculars, comfortable shoes, and a light jacket. Use a soft duffel bag for flights.
Use layers: base layers, fleece, and waterproof jacket. Bring warm clothes for cold nights and a good sleeping bag.
Pack strong hiking boots, trekking poles, headlamp, and gloves. You can rent some items in Arusha or Moshi.
Tanzania is mostly warm. Coastal areas and Zanzibar are hot (25–30°C). Mountains are much cooler.
There are two rainy seasons: March–May (long rains) and November–December (short rains). Dry seasons are best for safaris.
Buy good travel insurance. It should cover medical evacuation and adventure activities.
For Zanzibar, you must also buy the local mandatory insurance.
Your passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months after your return date. It must have blank pages for stamps.
Keep copies of your passport separately. Children need their own passports.
Tanzania is generally safe for tourists on organized trips. The main risk is petty theft in cities.
Stay alert, use hotel safes, and follow your guide’s instructions on safari. Choose reputable operators.
Drone flying is strictly controlled. You need official permission from aviation authorities.
Drones are usually banned in national parks. Using one without approval can lead to confiscation or fines.
